What is the time difference between Moscow and Tokyo?

The gap is a hard six hours. Moscow Standard Time sits at UTC+3. Japan Standard Time sits at UTC+9. No clocks change in either city, ever. If your phone says 09:00 in Moscow, Tokyo reads 15:00. At 21:00 in Moscow, Tokyo has already rolled into 03:00 the next day. The offset does not care about the season: January and July are identical.

JST basics for the Moscow planner

Japan Standard Time is one of the few major Asian time zones that never observes DST. A brief experiment ended in 1952. The result is a 6-hour offset from Moscow that stays locked. For a Moscow-based person, Tokyo is always ahead. That makes the arithmetic simple. It also makes the overlap in standard business hours punishingly narrow.

Best times to call between Moscow and Japan

Typical office hours in both cities run roughly 09:00-18:00. That gives you a three-hour window for a live conversation.

Moscow time Tokyo time Status
09:00 15:00 Tokyo mid-afternoon, Moscow start of day. Good for a late-afternoon call in Japan.
12:00 18:00 Tokyo end of day. Works if you call right at Moscow lunch.
15:00 21:00 Tokyo evening. Acceptable for informal calls, not for business.

The rule of thumb: Moscow 09:00-12:00 (Tokyo 15:00-18:00) is your safe zone.

Who should do something different? Anyone on the Tokyo side who works a flexible schedule. If you are the person in Tokyo calling Moscow, your best window is 15:00-18:00 JST. That hits Moscow 09:00-12:00. If you wait until after dinner in Tokyo, Moscow is asleep. The default advice, call in the morning, is wrong for the Tokyo caller. Call in your late afternoon.

A note on Japanese business culture

Japanese offices often start the day earlier than Moscow offices. Many workers are at their desks by 08:30 JST. But meetings rarely begin before 09:00. The real constraint is the end of the day: many Tokyo offices empty out by 17:30 or 18:00. A call scheduled for 18:00 JST (12:00 Moscow) may feel rushed on the Japanese side.

Moscow vs Tokyo time: check before you dial

The interactive tool handles the math. But check two things before you use it:

  • Date boundaries. Moscow 23:00 is Tokyo 05:00 the next day. Schedule a call at 23:00 Moscow time on a Friday and it lands at 05:00 Saturday in Tokyo. That is outside business hours.
  • Public holidays. Russia has a long New Year break (1-8 January). Japan has Golden Week (late April to early May). The converter shows the time. It does not know whether the recipient is at work. Cross-check against the Russia Public Holidays 2026 page and the Japanese holiday calendar before you finalise.

If you are dealing with jet lag on either end, the Jet Lag to Moscow guide covers eastbound recovery strategies that apply equally to the reverse direction.
