Moscow Exchange trading hours: the short answer
Equities, bonds, derivatives and most other instruments trade 10:00 to 18:45 Moscow Standard Time (MSK). That is the window you need.
A pre-market period for some instruments starts at 06:50 MSK. It covers currency swaps, repo operations and select futures. For standard stocks or ETFs, ignore it. Your window is 10:00-18:45.
MOEX does not observe daylight saving time. Russia has been on permanent standard time (UTC+3) since October 2014. The exchange opens and closes at the same clock time every day, all year. No spring-forward or fall-back adjustment to track.
How do Moscow exchange trading hours line up with other markets?
The 10:00-18:45 MSK window overlaps differently with major markets depending on the season. Here is the breakdown using real offsets from January and July 2026.
Winter (January 2026)
Relative to Moscow (MSK), the offsets on 15 January 2026 were:
- London: 3 hours behind
- Paris: 2 hours behind
- Dubai: 1 hour ahead
- Mumbai: 2.5 hours ahead
- Singapore: 5 hours ahead
- Tokyo: 6 hours ahead
- Sydney: 8 hours ahead
- New York: 8 hours behind
- Chicago: 9 hours behind
- Los Angeles: 11 hours behind
When MOEX opens at 10:00 MSK in January:
- London is 07:00. The London Stock Exchange opens at 08:00 GMT. A 1-hour gap, then 2 hours of overlap (08:00-10:00 London time, 10:00-12:00 Moscow).
- New York is 02:00. The NYSE opens at 09:30 EST. That is 17:30 MSK. Just over 1 hour of overlap (17:30-18:45 Moscow).
- Tokyo is 16:00. The Tokyo Stock Exchange closes at 15:00 JST. No overlap.
- Sydney is 02:00 AEDT the next day. No overlap.
Summer (July 2026)
The UK and Europe shift to daylight saving time. Moscow does not. The offsets on 15 July 2026 were:
- London: 2 hours behind
- Paris: 1 hour behind
- New York: 7 hours behind
- Chicago: 8 hours behind
- Los Angeles: 10 hours behind
- Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, Tokyo: same as January
When MOEX opens at 10:00 MSK in July:
- London is 08:00 BST. Full overlap from open to close.
- Paris is 09:00 CEST. Full overlap.
- New York is 03:00 EDT. The NYSE opens at 09:30 EDT, which is 16:30 MSK. Just over 2 hours of overlap (16:30-18:45).
- Tokyo is still 16:00 JST. Still no overlap.
Moscow-to-London trading is easier in summer. Moscow-to-New York is tight all year but slightly better in summer: 2-plus hours versus 1-plus.
Is the MOEX pre-market session worth waking up for?
The pre-market (06:50-10:00 MSK) is not for retail stock traders. It exists for:
- Currency swaps: banks and institutional counterparties settling FX positions
- Repo operations: short-term borrowing against securities
- Some futures and derivatives: contracts that need an early execution window
If you are buying Sberbank shares or a Moscow-listed ETF, your session starts at 10:00. Do not confuse the pre-market with regular hours.
When does the Moscow Exchange close for holidays?
The exchange follows Russian public holidays. No trading on these days:
- New Year Holidays: 1-8 January 2026 (and 1-8 January 2027)
- Christmas Day: 7 January (falls within the New Year break)
- Defender of the Fatherland Day: 23 February
- International Women's Day: 8 March
- Holiday of Spring and Labor: 1 May
- Victory Day: 9 May
- Russia Day: 12 June
- Unity Day: 4 November
When a public holiday falls on a weekend, the exchange typically closes on the nearest weekday, usually the Monday. Check the official MOEX holiday calendar each year for exact treatment.
How does Moscow time affect your trading schedule?
Moscow is on MSK (UTC+3) year-round. Same offset as:
- Eastern European Summer Time (EEST) in summer (but EEST is summer-only; Moscow is permanent)
- Arabia Standard Time (AST): Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar
- East Africa Time (EAT): Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia
- Further-eastern European Time (FET): Belarus, parts of Turkey
If you trade against London or New York, the rule is simple. Moscow is always 3 hours ahead of GMT in winter and 2 hours ahead of BST in summer. Against New York, it is 8 hours ahead of EST and 7 hours ahead of EDT.
Will Moscow exchange trading hours change in 2027?
No clock change is coming. Russia has no DST planned for 2027 or beyond. The next disruption is the New Year holidays.
On 1 January 2027, the exchange will be closed. Trading resumes on 9 January 2027, a Monday. The 8-day break (1-8 January) is the longest closure of the year. If you need to execute a trade before the break, your last window is 31 December 2026, 10:00-18:45 MSK.
