Why Sydney is 8 hours ahead in January and 7 in July

Moscow stays on UTC+3 (MSK) every day of the year. Russia abandoned daylight saving time in 2014, so the city’s offset never moves.

Sydney flips. It runs on Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST, UTC+10) during its winter and Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT, UTC+11) during its summer. Because the seasons run in reverse, Sydney’s summer clocks are Moscow’s winter, and its winter clocks are Moscow’s summer.

The result: Sydney is 8 hours ahead of Moscow from October to March and 7 hours ahead from April to September. That pattern is the reverse of what you get with London or New York, where the gap shrinks in the northern summer.

When Sydney is on AEST and when it switches to AEDT

Sydney season Sydney offset Moscow offset Moscow is…
Winter (April, September) AEST (UTC+10) MSK (UTC+3) 7 hours behind
Summer (October, March) AEDT (UTC+11) MSK (UTC+3) 8 hours behind

On 15 January 2026, at noon in Moscow, it is 20:00 in Sydney. On 15 July 2026, at noon in Moscow, it is 19:00 in Sydney. The seasonal flip is built into those two numbers.

Book Sydney’s morning, skip its afternoon

The practical window is punishingly narrow. Sydney business hours, 09:00 to 17:00, land between 01:00 and 09:00 Moscow time during the Sydney summer, and between 02:00 and 10:00 Moscow time during the Sydney winter.

Book this: Sydney’s morning. A 09:00 start hits 01:00 in Moscow during summer and 02:00 in Moscow during winter. Late night for Moscow, but the least bad option. A 10:00 Sydney call pushes Moscow to 02:00 or 03:00.

Skip this: Sydney’s afternoon. A 14:00 meeting there means a 06:00 or 07:00 alarm in Moscow.

If you are in Moscow and need to reach someone during the Sydney business day, dial between 01:00 and 09:00 your time. The reverse direction is easier: Moscow 13:00 to 17:00 lands in the Sydney evening, 20:00 to midnight in summer or 21:00 to 01:00 in winter. Use the Moscow, Sydney converter

Pick a time in either city and the tool shows the matching hour in the other. It switches between AEST and AEDT automatically based on the date you choose.

Three things to check before you book:

  • Sydney’s DST transitions fall on the first Sunday in October (clocks forward) and the first Sunday in April (clocks back). On those two days the difference jumps by one hour.
  • Moscow never changes. The only variable in the pair is Sydney.
  • Melbourne runs on the same clock. The difference is identical. See the Moscow vs Melbourne time page.

What time is it in Sydney when Moscow is…

Moscow time Sydney (April, September) Sydney (October, March)
03:00 10:00 11:00
06:00 13:00 14:00
09:00 16:00 17:00
12:00 19:00 20:00
15:00 22:00 23:00
18:00 01:00 (next day) 02:00 (next day)
21:00 04:00 (next day) 05:00 (next day)
00:00 07:00 08:00

Rule of thumb: add 7 hours from April to September, add 8 hours from October to March. When in doubt, check the converter.
