When can I actually reach someone in Moscow from New York?

New York and Moscow share a narrow calling window because of an 8-hour gap in standard time that shrinks to 7 hours when New York moves its clocks forward. Moscow does not shift. That means the overlap between Moscow's business day and New York's waking hours is short, but it is predictable.

Moscow offices typically run from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM MSK. New York's business day runs from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Eastern Time. The overlap lives in New York's early morning and Moscow's late afternoon.

How to use the New York, Moscow calling window

Call at the start of the Moscow afternoon, not the end.

If you call Moscow at4:00 PM MSK (9:00 AM EST in standard time,10:00 AM EDT in daylight time), you catch people who have returned from lunch and are still fresh for the afternoon. If you call at5:00 PM or6:00 PM MSK, you risk catching people who are winding down or already on their way home.

Avoid Monday mornings and Friday afternoons in Moscow.

Monday mornings are for planning, and Friday afternoons are for wrapping up. Call Tuesday through Thursday if you can.

Respect the lunch break.

Moscow lunch is typically1:00 PM to2:00 PM MSK. That is5:00 AM to6:00 AM EST in standard time, or6:00 AM to7:00 AM EDT in daylight time. Most New Yorkers are asleep then anyway, so it is not a problem for calls from New York. But if you are scheduling a recurring meeting, do not schedule it for Moscow's lunch hour.

Is there a late-night option for calling Moscow from New York?

If you cannot call in the early morning, the only alternative is Moscow's early morning, which is New York's late evening.

  • Moscow9:00 AM MSK = New York1:00 AM EST (standard time) or2:00 AM EDT (daylight time). That is the middle of the night for New York.
